Geographe
Area under vine: 710 ha (1775 acres)
The Geographe region extends from Busselton in the south around and
up the west coast to an area just half way to the capital city of West
Australia, Perth, and then inland and south along the Darling Range.
This range is an escarpment of relatively low hills that extends from
north of Perth through to south east of Bunbury. The foothills and
hills of the Darling Range between Boyanup and Harvey, east and north
east of Bunbury offer a distinct environment. The hilly topography
and proximity to the coast result in early sea breezes with moderately
high afternoon relative humidities and low temperature variability
considering the hot sunny climate slopes of excellent gravelly lime
soils that exist from altitudes of about 50 meters to 200 meters or
more. In the higher altitude in southern parts of the area around the
Ferguson Valley temperatures are at the lower end and provide some
exceptional vineyards. There are some excellent frost-free vineyard
sites on this escarpment which enjoys cool nights due to the height
above sea level all through the growing period.
