Swan District
Area under vines: 850 ha (2187 acres)
This
very select area of West Australia was the first planted to vines in
1834.
The region focuses primarily on the sub region of the Swan Valley
which is on the northern outskirts of Perth, the capital city of
West Australia,
and can be reached within a 30-minute drive of the city centre. The
Swan District extends from the outer perimeter of Perth City, in
fact quite near to the International Airport, northwards for approximately
for 60km on the coastal plain, and includes some of the richest soils
to be found in the viticultural regions of West Australia. Although
this is the warmest of the West Australian wine regions, with a moderate
summer cooled by mainly south westerly winds, ripening conditions
in
the Swan Valley can in fact lead to excellent full bodied table wines.
The warm nights favour physiological ripening and full flavour.
